Finland offers a generous advance period for trademark renewal. PRH accepts the renewal from one year before expiry, and a late renewal can be completed during the six months afterwards. Acting in the advance window gives a foreign owner enough time to review the proprietor, representative and goods and services before the next ten-year term begins.
Finland’s eighteen-month renewal timeline
Viewed from end to end, the filing opportunity spans eighteen months: twelve months before expiry and six months after. Those periods are not equal. The first is the planned renewal window. The second is a grace period with a higher basic fee and a hard final date.
PRH may send a reminder, but the owner remains responsible for keeping the registration in force. NordicIP therefore maintains its own docket and seeks instructions well before expiry. If a case arrives after the ordinary date, we check the register immediately and calculate the remaining late period.

Representation is part of the protection, not an address line
For a proprietor outside the European Economic Area, PRH’s guidance requires an EEA-resident representative with authority to act in matters concerning the mark. This continuing representation is especially useful when an international group has several Finnish rights or has inherited registrations through an acquisition. Check the goods and services before the new term
A partial renewal is possible. It may be appropriate where the business has left a market and no longer needs part of the registered scope. The savings should be compared with the value of the omitted protection, because the removed goods and services cannot simply be added back to the old registration.
The class list deserves close attention where the original wording is old. Nice Classification editions change over time, while the registration retains its historical specification. Three registers may be relevant to Finland
A Finnish national registration is renewed through PRH. An EU trademark is renewed through EUIPO and covers Finland as part of the European Union. A WIPO international registration designating Finland is renewed through WIPO. Similar brand names in the portfolio do not mean the renewal route is interchangeable.

Use the one-year window for portfolio decisions
Finland’s longer advance period is particularly useful where the renewal depends on a budget cycle, licence approval or group-wide brand review. The owner can decide the scope and arrange any corporate recordal without working against a short pre-expiry timetable.
Early filing also provides a clean status for transactions. If a Finnish registration is part of due diligence or security documentation, completing the renewal and aligning the proprietor before closing can remove an avoidable qualification from the portfolio schedule.
