What a Power of Attorney is
A Power of Attorney is the document by which you, the applicant, authorise a local agent to act for you before the national office — to file the application, respond to the examiner, and receive official correspondence on your behalf. It is what lets us stand in your shoes at the DKPTO, PRH, Patentstyret or PRV.
A straightforward signing package
NordicIP prepares the relevant country form for an ordinary authorised signature. The completed appointment package consists of:
- the applicant’s verified legal name and address;
- the name and position of the authorised signatory;
- an ordinary signature and signing date; and
- a clear PDF scan returned to NordicIP for the matter file.
Once the scan arrives, we match it to the mark, countries and owner details before preparing the filing. The signed original can remain with the applicant’s corporate records.
What the PoA must contain
To be effective, the Power of Attorney needs to identify the parties and the authority being granted. In broad terms, that is:
- the applicant — full legal name and address, exactly as they should appear on the register;
- the agent being appointed to act;
- the mark and scope — either the specific application or registration, or a general authority to act in the applicant’s trademark matters; and
- the signature of a person authorised to sign for the applicant, with their name and the date.

Signing for a company
Most applicants are companies rather than individuals. A director, authorised officer or another person with authority for the applicant signs the form and states their name and position. NordicIP checks that the company details on the authority match the intended register entry.
One PoA per jurisdiction
Each national filing is a separate matter before a separate office, so as a rule you will sign a separate Power of Attorney for each country. A single general PoA can usually cover several matters within the same jurisdiction, which keeps things tidy when you are filing more than one mark in the same country.

Complete the filing instruction
Send the authority with the mark itself, the applicant’s details, the required countries and a commercial description of the goods and services. Add any priority filing and launch deadline. Do the offices need the original?
A clear scanned copy is the working document used for the filing. Retain the signed original with your own records and send NordicIP the scan for the application file.
Keep the authority aligned with the owner
A Power of Attorney is tied to the party who signed it. If the mark is assigned or the applicant’s name changes, NordicIP checks the new register position and supplies the appropriate updated authority for signature. We coordinate the appointment with the ownership or name recordal so correspondence continues through the correct representative file.
