Norwegian patent renewal begins while the application is still young and continues annually for as long as the right is maintained within its available term. Patentstyret publishes a fee for each year, and the amount rises as the right ages. The owner therefore needs the correct fee year, not simply a recurring calendar date.

How Patentstyret calculates the annual-fee cycle
Patentstyret states that the first payment falls due at the beginning of the third fee year and covers the first three annual fees together. The fee year is calculated from the filing month, and the due date is normally the last day of the calendar month in which the new fee year begins.
For example, the date is not calculated from grant, from the date the owner received a reminder or from the date an agent took over the file. The original application history controls. National-phase, divisional and validated EP cases should be checked individually because additional procedural dates can affect the first available national action.
Payment window and current late charge
Patentstyret permits an annual fee to be paid from six months before the due date. Its current payment guidance also provides a six-month period after the due date, with an additional patent late fee of NOK 700. That final period is a safeguard, not the preferred payment timetable.
NordicIP requests instructions in time for regular payment. If a case arrives after the ordinary due date, we verify the last possible date and increased cost before accepting the instruction. The client’s internal approval date is set earlier than the office deadline to allow for cleared funds and payment confirmation.
Official Norwegian fees by year
The current Patentstyret schedule lists separate amounts for each fee year. The first three annual fees are currently grouped in the first payment, and later annual amounts increase through the patent term. Supplementary protection certificates have their own later-year fee entries.
Every quote is checked against the live official table. An older agent invoice may contain a previous tariff or a service fee that cannot be reused as the official amount. NordicIP separates the government fee, any late charge and our agreed handling fee.
Reminders are not invoices
Patentstyret explains that annual renewal is voluntary and does not issue an invoice. It may send a notification, but responsibility for the deadline remains with the owner and its representative. The portfolio should therefore have an independent docket and an instruction workflow that does not depend on receiving an office communication.
NordicIP reminders identify the right and decision required. They are followed until we receive an instruction to pay or a deliberate written decision not to maintain. That distinction prevents silence from being mistaken for commercial abandonment.
European patents validated in Norway
After a European patent is validated in Norway, national annual fees are paid to Patentstyret. The official Norwegian guidance states that the first national annual fee is not due earlier than three months after the EPO grant publication and that later fees normally fall annually on the national schedule.
When NordicIP receives a new validation, we check the EPO grant date, validation timing, Norwegian identifier and first national due point. Norway then appears as a separate line in the portfolio, even when the owner gives one combined instruction for several validated countries.
What a Norwegian payment report should show
A useful completion report identifies the national case number, owner, fee year, official deadline, amount paid, payment date and next expected annual-fee date. NordicIP retains the receipt or available order confirmation with that record. If the public register has not yet updated, the payment evidence remains linked to the case until the status can be checked.
Transfer a Norwegian annuity portfolio
Provide the Norwegian application or patent number, original filing date, national-phase or EP-validation route, owner, status, last paid fee year, next deadline and the latest proof of payment. Include any instruction already sent to another provider so duplicate payment risk can be resolved.
