Finnish patent annuities are annual official fees that maintain a pending national application, a granted Finnish patent or a European patent validated in Finland. They begin early in the patent lifecycle and increase over time, so reliable management requires more than a generic yearly reminder.
NordicIP verifies the PRH record, calculates the next national action, requests authority with a complete cost and reports the completed payment. Foreign owners and IP firms can place Finland on the same instruction calendar as Denmark, Norway and Sweden while keeping a country-specific audit trail.
The first Finnish payment point
PRH’s current guidance states that the fee falls due each year on the last day of the month in which the original filing date falls. The first and second annual fees are payable together with the third-year fee. As a result, the first payment arrives when the application enters its third payment year, even if substantive examination is still continuing.
Example: where the original filing month is February, PRH’s published example places the first payment for years one to three on the last day of February two years after filing. NordicIP checks the actual filing history rather than applying the example mechanically to national-phase, divisional or exceptional cases.
Six months before and six months after
A Finnish annual fee cannot normally be paid earlier than six months before the due date. If the ordinary deadline is missed, PRH provides a further six months in which the fee can be paid with a 20% surcharge. The final late date should be calculated from the official due date and treated as a strict portfolio deadline.
Our reminder cycle is designed to complete payment during the regular period. A late instruction is flagged separately, quoted using the increased PRH fee and handled with an earlier internal cut-off so there is time to resolve any record or funds issue.
Official fees increase with the patent year
PRH publishes a year-by-year table for national applications and patents. A forecast must therefore identify the correct fee year for every case. The official amount should be refreshed when the instruction is issued because national tariffs can be amended and a late surcharge changes the total.
NordicIP’s quote shows the official PRH fee, any applicable surcharge and our handling fee clearly. This lets the owner compare the cost with the commercial value of maintaining the Finnish right and gives the instructing firm a clean sum for approval.
National applications and granted patents
Annual fees continue while the Finnish application is pending and, after grant, for the available patent term. A grant event does not reset the original filing date or turn the record into an unrelated renewal schedule. The docket should preserve the filing history, fee year and payments across that change of status.
When the status changes, NordicIP checks that the next action remains correctly calculated and that the owner recorded by PRH matches the entity giving instructions. Any ownership or address discrepancy is reported before payment rather than hidden in a routine confirmation.
European patents validated in Finland
A validated European patent is maintained through the Finnish national system. The PRH record and fee schedule should be established as soon as the Finnish validation is complete. The first national payment can depend on the EPO grant timing and the relationship between grant and the ordinary annual-fee date.
NordicIP records the EP reference, Finnish national identifier, owner and first national action together. If the same patent was validated across the four Nordic countries, the client receives a consolidated upcoming-action view, followed by separate national payment evidence.
What NordicIP checks before accepting the docket
- Finnish application or patent number and any EP family reference;
- original filing date and route into Finland;
- current applicant or proprietor on the PRH record;
- pending or granted status and last paid fee year;
- next ordinary deadline and any late period;
- last receipt or bank/payment record; and
- instructions on reminders, currencies and authorised contacts.
From reminder to payment evidence
Each reminder identifies the case, fee year, deadline and cost. Once authority and funds are received, NordicIP arranges payment under the correct PRH reference. We then provide the available confirmation and update the next annual date. That closed loop matters: a bank instruction alone is not treated as proof that the portfolio record is complete.
